Cataloging the many Bristol street artists
The city of Bristol has become synonymous with street art, thanks in large part to their most famous son Banksy. But the depth of creativity goes far beyond. Many talented street artist are emerging as more than simple copycats looking to cash in on the Banksy hype (although there are still plenty of those to go around).
Graphic designer Justin Staple created the website Bristol Street Art to catalog past and present work thru photos and logs that record their locations. It’s an important job given the temporary nature of street art. Whether by the hand of progress or nature or vandalism, the chances of permanency are slim.
This site shows that there are still true visionaries out there, tagging the world and the city of Bristol is their Mecca.

As an artist, I can appreciate Banksy’s thing but it’s good to see the variety of expression that’s out there.
So, when exactly does graffiti become art? What is the point where someone goes from saying, “Clean that shit off my wall!” to, “Oh that’s a treasure!” (??)
When does anything become art? What’s really so great about Warhol or Picasso or Banksy or Walt Disney? Who decides?
