As a child, finger painting is a visceral connection to creativity that comes naturally. We give children some paper or canvas, a little paint, and the freedom to express themselves. The results are always revealing regardless of quality. As an adult, many of us need to work in order to get the same — or any — results. Tapping into that space which allows us to freely explore imagination can be a challenge. Artist Kelly Nicole Sullivan has made that connection.
A self-taught artist, Sullivan’s work is vibrant and emotional. As a finger painter, her hands are her tools. Touching skin to paint to canvas connects to a core that exorcises emotions in a raw, vulnerable way. Color and form pass from her mind to your eyes and can spark a response that is hard to explain. But that’s the whole point. Art should be a mystery and the reaction to that art should be personal.
“Drawing solely from her imagination, Kelly’s paintings are immersive, filled with vibrant hues and abstract forms that challenge the viewer to feel rather than simply observe.”
While her inspirations may come from very personal places, the results are universally unique. Each piece evolves thru the eyes of the beholder into ever-changing tales. The truths may be different, but they are truths nonetheless.
