It’s the little hot dog stand that could. Refusing to abandon the place it had called home for over 50 years. Some say even longer than that. Mayfair Boardwalk Grill can trace their history back to the 1930s but has been in continues service since the late 1950s.

While the immediate surroundings may have changed, Mayfair still serves up fantastic boardwalk food. Lunch for us was a couple of too-big-for-the-bun hot dogs and fries on the windy beach. Fixins were applied, making the eating even more adventurous … and messy.

This was the place that stood alone when I was here in 2005 and again in 2006 to see Bruce Springsteen rehearse. This was the place where the guy said, “Come back in a few years, you won’t recognize the town.” This was also the place that my brother and I swore would not be here when the changes came.

Yet, here it is, as tasty and stubborn as ever. Sometimes resistance is not futile and survival is not impossible. Sometimes — no make that all the time — truth comes on a hot dog bun.

This is also one of the only places that lists their address as Boardwalk and not Ocean Ave. Bravo.
