A year ago I put forth the idea that we as a people could turn the world around through positive actions and simple kindness. I said, “Let’s not wait for the political heads of the world to figure this out. Chances are, they never will.” And now, here we are once again with a President trying to convince us to take military action in the Middle East.
I have to admit that trying to stay positive these days isn’t easy. Trying to not attack our President for his clear lack of vision is not easy. Trying to understand why we need to go and blow up innocent people in the name of saving those same innocent people isn’t easy. Trying to cope with a government that will help those across the globe while ignoring those in Detroit isn’t easy.
But then I breathe.
Because I can breathe.
I think about how lucky I am to be alive. I think about those friends that I lost and the memories burned into my brain from that day.
The truth is we’re probably going to attack Syria and we’re probably going to get dragged down into another money-sucking quagmire for years to come. So this year I have a new suggestion for you all.
I still say that we can change the world thru good deeds and kind actions, but let’s also understand that we can change our leaders if we are unhappy. And not thru any armed revolt. What most of us have forgotten is that the foundation of our government — for the people, by the people — is built in a way that not only allows but encourages us to keep our leaders accountable.
Unhappy with the job our leaders are doing? Fire them! It really is that simple. Just think back to the 2003 California Gubernatorial Recall. It may have been fodder for late-night comics, but it was also an example how much power we the people actually have.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; There are a whole lot more of us than there are of them. So let’s do it. Let’s change our world. One simple step at a time.
