Ah, This Should Be Safe to Open…

Wait! What do you mean I have a virus?! C’mon! How bad can an attachment titled ‘Surprise’ be, really? Pretty bad, actually.

Of course, I deleted the email. It seemed a pretty common sense thing to do. But I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard of people opening attachments just like this and then being genuinely shocked at the infection of their PC.

It always amazes me how, after so many years of daily internet usage, people can still be suckered by things like this. Fake emails, loaded files, nonsecure links, etc. Why does this happen? Simple. People are (generally speaking) stupid.

It’s not entirely our fault. We’ve become so dependent upon and comfortable with technology, that many of us just don’t pay attention to it.

So, here are a few tips for avoiding an infection:

  • Don’t open an email attachment from anyone you don’t know.
  • Even if you know the sender, ask yourself, “Was I expecting something from this person?”
  • Keep your Virus Protection Software up to date.

Follow these simple tips and you should be OK.
