Music Spotlight: ‘Before You Get Broken’ by Guest Directors

The band Guest Directors came to be when two 90s alt-rock figures met in 2014. Gary Thorstensen from TAD and Julie D from Chinchilla. They realized they had a shared love of music that went beyond their respective pasts. The result is a mix of powerful and eccentric, smart and edgy hook laden songs that retain the grit and independence of the 90s. And their most recent album ‘Before You Get Broken’ (2026) is no exception.

As someone who was very much involved in — and affected by — the indie music of the 80s and 90s, this album seriously resonates with me. There’s a solid lineage back to a certain time and place. The songs sit squarely in an alt-rock pocket with contrapuntal overdriven guitars, melancholy vocals, steady moving rhythm, and the added warmth of piano. The production leaves a lot space for the songs breathe and grow.

What essentially started out as a sort of side project evolved quickly into a something much more. The current lineup includes Julie D. on guitar & piano, Gary Thorstensen on guitar with the two of them trading vocal duties. The rhythm section is dutifully manned by Charlie Russo on bass and Rian Turner on drums, percussion — while also providing additional guitar.

Listeners of a certain age will appreciate the familiar elements built into the DNA of Guest Directors. Although the underlying sound may be reminiscent, the songs are fully fresh and original. They feel robust yet intimate, DIY yet polished. The band has cultivated a pleasantly noisy garden from the seeds of rock, shoegaze, post punk, and more.

Before You Get Broken’ by Guest Directors is available on Bandcamp.
