Hail Seitan

Funny ad on a phone booth. Clever? Yes. Funny? Yes. Will it offend some wacko fundamentalist buffoon? Probably.

Clever? Yes. Funny? Yes. Expected from Fresh Direct? Maybe. I really don’t know anything about this company’s marketing style, but this gem on a phone booth near 30th Street on Park Ave in NYC caught my eye.

Three thoughts crossed my mind.

  1. Brilliant! I love this kind of unorthodox, irreverent marketing.
  2. What is Seitan? Thanks to Wikipedia, I found out that seitan is wheat gluten (aka wheat meat, gluten meat, gluten), a food made from the gluten of wheat. It is made by washing wheat flour dough with water until all the starch dissolves, leaving insoluble gluten as an elastic mass which is then cooked before being eaten.
  3. How long before some whacko fundamentalist buffoon comes along, gets offended and demands its removal? Probably not long.

So … Hail Seitan … while we still can.
