Putting My Money Where My Mouth Is

Sponsoring my own upper lip for the cause

I got to thinking today that it was not right of me to ask others to sponsor my mustache unless I did so myself. So, with PayPal password in hand, I signed in and gave myself some money. OK, not really gave myself money. Rather, I gave money to Mustaches vs. Cancer which will benefit the Pediatric Dept. at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

It seemed obvious enough. Putting my money where my mouth is (literally), but I was a little surprised by how I did not realize this until almost a week into the campaign. This got me thinking about how others may forget to give.

Their day to day lives get in the way and — like the way they forget to call their mom or eat properly or set their DVR to record Dancing With The Stars — the thought of giving to a charity may slip their minds.

Maybe they’re just jaded from being bombarded daily with “give to this” and “give to that”. I know I’ve grown a thicker skin over the years, which acts less as a protector now and more as a deflector. So neither good nor bad gets in.

Whatever anyone’s reason may be, my choice to break the habit of apathy in myself came today. So, I gave. If you want to make a donation on my behalf, that would be awesome. You can do it anonymously too if for some reason you don’t want anyone to know what a wonderful soul you have.
