Music Spotlight: ‘Forever Howlong’ by Black Country, New Road

Moody, intricate instrumentation and vocal harmonies that would fit in with 70s progressive folk rock.

In keeping with my goal to skim the interwebs for inspiration, I discovered Black Country, New Road when drummer Charlie Wayne was featured on the show ‘Track Star’. The premise of the show is guests listen to songs and guess the artist. They’ll have conversations with the host Jack Coyne about the songs and inspiration. It was those conversations between Charlie and Jack that made me want to seek out Black Country, New Road.

Forever Howlong’ (available on Bandcamp) is the band’s third full-length release. It is filled with beautifully lush harmonies, intricate instrumentation, polyrhythmic arrangements, moments of gentleness, moments of power, and interesting storytelling. The overall performance is extremely satisfying.

The sound conjures memories of 1970s progressive folk rock. I can hear influences of Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, and David Bowie from that era. It is more down to earth and accessible than math rock yet more challenging than typical singer/songwriter fare. The proficiency of the musicians is clear, the vocals are magical, and the production is just right.

The lead track ‘Besties’ (watch the video below) really sets the tone for the album. A classically inspired harpsichord riff explodes into an intensity of the full band that then settles into a flowing arrangement. Acoustic guitar and voice begins telling a story of one friend looking out for another as the song builds back up again. It’s clever in so many ways, as is the entire album.

There’s a theatricality, a drama that weaves throughout the album. They’re able to take everyday life and skillfully bring a new perspective. There is also enough oddity in the lyrics and experimentation in the music along the way to keep the listener wondering where they’re going next. This is not straight ahead. It requires an open mind. It begs you to really listen. To let yourself be taken by the material.

I’ve read that this album represents somewhat of an evolution for the band, since the departure of founding member and vocalist Isaac Wood. I can’t confirm or deny that since this is my introduction to the band. I will however seek out their past material as that also has gotten rave reviews.

In the meantime, check out their website: blackcountrynewroad.com. You can buy ‘Forever Howlong’ on Bandcamp.

Cheers!
Stephen
