I have a lot talented friends. Musicians, poets, artists, photographers, etc. Most I met many years ago as a writer and got closer to when I owned my cafe in Hoboken. One of those friends is singer/songwriter/painter David Ribyat. David had made many an appearance at my cafe over the years. Singing his songs and showcasing his paintings. One song in particular (‘Man of Simple Taste’) was his signature tune.
I must have seen him perform that song dozens of times and it’s now been given a new life with the band Doctor Mister Genius, made up of more old friends and Hoboken music mainstays. Bill Hamilton (guitar/vocals), Chuck Tumulty (drums/vocals), Jonathan ‘JP’ Pepe (bass/vocals) and of course David Ribyat (guitar/vocals/keyboards).
‘Man of Simple Taste’ is as the title suggests — simple. A catchy tune with a country twang and subtle harmonies tells the story of a man who is happy in his place. No need to embellish his life with excessive fineries. In a world where society’s opinion is more important than anything, it’s a sentiment that would be well advised for many. The music lends itself to the simple message. Comfortable and refreshing. Laid back and easy. There’s a cool feeling to the recording.
No fancy food
No French champaign
No money to waste
I’d rather have an ice cold beer
I’m a man of simple taste
I love this new iteration of a song that’s been played in so many bars around Hoboken and Jersey City. In my own li’l cafe as well. I’ve heard many different versions, all great. This one is a delightful addition to those memories, with the talent and personalities of each member of the band bringing a freshness and vibrancy to this local legend.
You can stream the track below. To support Doctor Mister Genius, I recommend buying the track on Bandcamp.
