It saddens me that I cannot make it to WE Fest XII (Wilmington, NC May 22-26, 2008). Especially considering this one promises to be the biggest fest ever. I’ve been to seven of them and only the wedding of a very, very dear friend could keep me away this year. As the time draws near, I thought it would be appropriate to share a tale of tribute from WE Fest X (2006).

It was late on night number two and I was standing outside of The Soapbox (255 N Front St. Wilmington, NC). I just needed to get some air and Glass City Colonels–a wonderfully heavy, tight band that could knock your balls off the back wall–were just finishing up their set. As the door swung open, my friend Lee Buffaloe Lee said, “Oh the band must be done, they’re playing a CD now.”

But something was amiss when I peaked in. “No!” I yelled, “It’s the band! They’re playing it!” Sure enough, the boys in Glass City Colonels surprised WE Fest founder and grand poobah Kenyata with a pumped-up rendition of ‘This Chevrolet’. It is one of my fondest WE Fest memories. Way better than seeing the dudes from the band Porn Flakes naked back in 1999.

Above is the original version of ‘This Chevrolet’ by Kenyata’s band The Majestic Twelve from the album ‘Searching for the Elvis Knob’ (2002).
