Live @ Luna Lounge, NYC
First my apologies to Jim Testa. I was supposed to go see him at the Charleston in Williamsburg. This stop to see The Shapes was to be a quickie. Snap some pix, jot down some notes and move on.
However after a miscommunication of where I was to meet a friend—she thought Brooklyn, I thought East Village—and several misdirected subway incidents, we never made it to the Charleston. She never even made it to the Luna.
The Shapes definitely conjure up images of the eighties with their catchy and melodic pop sound. So it was no big surprise to read their list of influences on MySpace.com.
Full-flavored guitars and solid, downright buoyant rhythms carry their friendly yet occasionally flirting-with-danger disposition along.
The band alternates between vocalists Mark and Tonia, occasionally pairing them off as well. I’m not sure how their songwriting duties breakdown, but I feel that the tunes lead by Tonia have more of an edge than others.
After the set, and my realization that making it to Brooklyn was not happening, I hung out with the band for a bit. I helped them load their equipment into their rehearsal space in exchange for a ride to the Port Authority. Not only a promising band, but a cool bunch of folks too.
