Vote at city hall tonight to determine studio’s future

For those who are not in the know; Hoboken’s Water Music is the only recording studio in the NYC area that offers living quarters for their clientele. They have been home to such acts as The Dave Matthews Band, Taking Back Sunday, Ween, Lamb Of God, Pharoah Sanders, Jimmy Eat World, Joey Ramone, Lenny White, Ryan Adams, Ben Folds Five and many, many others.

Water Music is located in Hoboken’s rapidly redeveloping Northwest Zone, which places the studio’s future in danger. In order to remain in Hoboken, the owners needed to do three things. One was to ask John Nastasi, architect and long time supporter of the arts, to design a new building. The second was to bring their case to City Hall. Third was to ask we the people to help.

The first two steps are underway. John created an incredible proposal that includes a 12,000 sq. ft. open air, public access Hoboken Arts Center for films, theater, dance recitals, readings, children’s activities, art exhibitions, craft fairs, music and community gatherings. The Arts Center will be on top of the studio complex and will have an interior gallery with a kitchen and prep rooms.

Many people within City Hall are excited about the project because they recognize that Hoboken doesn’t have any public access arts space. Geri Fallo (Director of Cultural Affairs), Michael Cricco (5th Ward Councilman), Elizabeth Vandor (City Planner) and others are supporting the plan.

So how can we help? Simple. As a music and arts loving community, we need to go to Hoboken City Hall and show support for this new facility. The City Council will be voting on the proposed new facility tonight. For far too long we’ve been watching the NYC and Hoboken area culture fade away into blocks of high-end, cookie-cutter homes. Let’s keep the arts alive. Come out this evening. Bring friends!
