Ron Leir is an actor, writer and reporter based in Hudson County, NJ. We met at an art exhibit in Jersey City where we traded tales of life in the area. He knew my late father who was quite active in local politics.

The following Tuesday at the Goldhawk in Hoboken, Ron stopped by to read some of his poetry. The imagery and tone of one piece really stuck with me so I asked if I could feature it here. Guess what his answer was…

Screen Gems
The magic box transfixes me
draws me in, distills my thoughts
keeps my mind from wandering
onto more precarious paths.

It channels programmed messages
to my anatomical antennae
tuned to receive these signals
that filter out sensory static.

You see, I traded in my senses
when they became too keen;
when I realized that the real world
had shed its skin, dismantled Reason.

Prophets once graced the Kingdom
and messengers carried their words
on the backs of their tongues
never asking, ‘Can you hear me now?’

Enlightenment has escaped me
I drained my brain with suds
Ah, Saturday morning brings delights
with re-runs of Elmer Fudd.
