LaMP are Russ Lawton (drums), Scott Metzger (guitar), and Ray Paczkowski (keys)
If you’re like me, you’re late to the LaMP game. As much as I enjoy a good jamband, I’m not plugged in to the scene. I know little to nothing of the bands or the music other than I like to chill and listen from time to time. And I guess that’s the whole point, to lose oneself in the music and just travel along with the sound. This live recording of LaMP’s sophomore release ‘One of Us’ contains enough improvisational jazz, funk, and rock grooves to grab my attention and keep me listening.
LaMP is an acronym of the band members’ names. Russ Lawton (drums), Scott Metzger (guitar), and Ray Paczkowski (keys). Lawton and Paczkowski are long time members of the Trey Anastasio Band as well as the avant-funk project Soule Monde. Metzger boasts an impressive resume of session work as well as being a member of the critically acclaimed Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. From what I’ve heard so far, this instrumental trio seems to possess a sort of telepathy in their playing. A crucial element in what separates a solid jamband from amateurish noodlers.
On the final day of recording their second album ‘One Of Us’, the band invited just thirty five fans into Tank Recording Studio in Vermont for a very special performance. The show captured both the excitement of a band debuting new material and the energy of seasoned players moving between valid improvisational chops and skilled musical precision.
The show is available now as a special name-your-own-price release on Bandcamp titled ‘One Of Us (Live at Tank – Burlington, VT – 7.18.24)’.
LaMP are currently on tour. Be sure to check their website for tour dates and go to Bandcamp to buy their music.
Cheers!
