Drawing inspiration from 70s/80s rock and jazz while infusing a modern feel through daring improvisation
Sometimes I like to hit random search parameters on Bandcamp. Playing a game of music roulette, if you will. And it works. That’s how I’ve discovered a lot of new music. It’s how I stumbled upon ‘Airborne’ by Jonas Larsson Band (2026). Jonas Larsson is a Swedish born guitarist based in the UK whose style is an amalgam of jazz, blues, hard rock, and fusion. Comprised of world-class virtuoso players, the band’s sound draws inspiration from the music of the 70s and 80s while infusing a modern, fresh feel through daring improvisation.
The ‘Airborne‘ album was recorded live with most of the songs actually done in one take. Capturing the band’s unfiltered, authentic performance lends to the album’s natural, impromptu, and human feel. There’s a subtle touch to the music yet also a very high, joyful energy. It never feels frantic or rushed even at it quickest pace nor does it ever feel too slow or laid back. Think John Scofield’s Uberjam but stripped to the bare essentials.
The band have a fantastic sense of harmony and melody. The guitar tone has just the right amount of contrast and distortion. The bass and drum groove settles back, floating squarely in the pocket. The keyboards shimmer and swell with an air of lightness and confidence. The saxophone lends a cool twist on a smooth jazz familiarity. The songs are well conceived, well crafted, and will bring a smile after a tough day.
Produced by John Nicholls, the album was recorded in Hastings, UK, with the original band lineup:
- Jonas Larsson – guitar
- Greg Heath – sax
- John Nicholls – bass
- Evan Jenkins – drums
- William South – keys
‘Airborne’ by Jonas Larsson Band (2026) is available on Bandcamp.
Cheers!
