They call it Nashville Groove Grass. Bluegrass roots, soulful vocals, and a heavy underlying funk.
The social media robot overlords have been good to me this week. This was another fun find. Slap Dragon describe the sound of their album ‘Mission Statement‘ (2026) as Nashville Groove Grass and you can hear it from the start. The roots of bluegrass are found in the customary acoustic instruments (madelin, guitar, bass) while an irresistible funk is heavy underneath. Soulful vocals full of emotion and joy ride on top. There’s an infectious enthusiasm felt in the sheer level of talent present. And as unique as this is, tradition is honored in the quality of the songs.
Bassist Scott Mulvahill and vocalist Laura Berens met in Nashville and began writing songs together in the summer of 2023. Mulvahill has an extensive resume, working with the likes of Ricky Skaggs, H.E.R., Bruce Hornsby, and more. Berens studied music therapy and has a singularly impressive voice that is both powerful and subtle. Their early jams garnered songs almost immediately. They were soon joined by some of Nashville’s top session players and their rise in popularity was quick.
Slap Dragon are able to navigate a winding road of genre hopping while avoiding pitfalls that often hinder similar projects. It’s a tightrope walk for sure, but this is not a novelty or a gimmick. This is more than just doing funk with acoustic instruments or adding soul to a bluegrass feel. This is a finely curated, well produced, and original sound. An authentically daring yet very balanced undertaking. Nothing is over the top or exaggerated.
