Fighting book deserts thru a variety of innovative programs including a whimsical Book Trolley.
Using the moniker Storybook Maze, Araba Maze calls herself a Radical Street Librarian. Hers is an inspirational story of finding a need, working at creating solutions, and doing so in the most joyful way. It all started several years ago as she would sit on her front stoop in Baltimore reading to her nieces and noticed other children from the neighborhood gathering. When she finished a story, they’d ask for more. That’s when she discovered that these children had no books of their own at home.
Wanting to help, she became a librarian but noticed that the families coming to the library were not the ones coming to the storytimes on her front stoop. She learned about the barriers that can keep many children from libraries, leading to book deserts — areas with little or no access to reading material. This could be due to not having proper identification, the time and effort to get to the library, or the funds needed in case of late fees. Things that many folks take for granted can prove to be impossible obstacles for others.
That’s when Araba became a Radical Street Librarian and in 2021 began her journey to get books to those who need it most. Over time she set up free book vending machines throughout the Baltimore area as well as free pop-up book events and public storytimes. She has since distributed thousands of books to areas of need. In 2024 she began her biggest quest; To design a unique Book Trolley. It’s sorta like one of those scholastic book mobiles that would visit schools, only hers would be more whimsical, more magical, and — most importantly — free.
And she did it! And yes, it’s an actual old trolley.
What struck me about Araba’s story was her enthusiasm and her positive energy, even in the face of difficulties and hurdles. Shortly after getting her trolley up and running, it was involved in an accident and put temporarily out of commission. During that time, she persisted. She continued to bring books to those in need and never lost the spark to want to help. Her events are carefully curated to address specific needs. It could be supporting families of gun violence, helping young children learn to read, or teaching the importance of inclusion.
Literacy is a crucial element in the growth of individuals and communities. Children who are read to at a young age — and are exposed to other creative forms of expression — experience healthier brain development. Reading also helps build a strong vocabulary and cognition. It helps children communicate their feelings, build a sense of empathy, and foster stronger relationship bonds. As they grow, so do their critical thinking and decision making skills. To a child, it’s more than a book, it’s a gateway to a better life.
I’m so happy that such an amazing story came across my social feeds. I was immediately inspired. As I approach my next milestone birthday (60 … what the?), I’ve been thinking of what the next chapter in my life may be. Since I doubt I’ll ever be able to retire, I’d like to find something meaningful to do as time rolls on to support myself and my community. Araba has the wheels in my head spinning like those of her trolley.
