The fun and music returns to Hoboken

Irish Rock Fest has not graced the shores of Hoboken since 2004. And while I found it easy enough to get to the venues in Manhattan since then, I much prefer the one-block walk from my apartment to Maxwell’s (1039 Washington St, Hoboken). Presented by Jivin’ Jones Records and CelticLounge.com, there were of course other reasons for wanting to go to this show.

First; Take three bands that each have their own take on Irish rock. Mix in a crowd of happy revelers wanting nothing more than a good time. And don’t forget to pour plentiful pints of Guinness. This is the recipe for a good night in my book. Although they made us pour our precious beverages into plastic cups before entering the back room.

Apparently tightly packed crowds bouncing around with glass in their mitts tends to make the folks at Maxwell’s nervous. I can see their point. However, here’s a bit of advice for you if you are a drinker of the stout. Have them pour it in a pint glass, drink about 1/3 of it, then pour what’s left into a plastic cup (which is naturally smaller than an imperial pint).

Like any of the Irish Rock Fests I’ve attended in the past, the mix of bands tonight was just right. Each bringing an energy and unique interpretation for our eager ears to feast on. The Gobshites from Foxboro, MA brought rock to tradition (and vice versa), punking it up and having a ball doing it. Growling, strong and loud with the fiddle never lost in the mayhem.

Next up were The Prodigals from NYC whose sound spans many styles and cleverly reconstructs tradition. Their fiery set included the button accordion and a bass trading busy arpeggios. This created a most interesting texture in their sound along with the minimal guitar and solid backbeat.

Closing out the night was the ever fun, wonderfully warped and Hoboken’s own Icewagon Flu. Talk about twisting things up. Bodhran and synchronized dance moves. Rock, reggae and Celtic flavors. Bass, drums and a metal washboard. Showmanship and a song about hot girls looking hotter with nudity. These guys never disappoint when they bring their party to the people.
