A gathering of friends celebrate the release of ‘Oranges, Yellows’

Fat Baby (112 Rivington St, NYC) continues to be a hot spot for original music. Despite certain failings of the room (distorted vocals, low ceiling, etc.) they still do a good job of getting loud bands to sound decent in a small space. They also have pretty impressive Happy Hour prices. I would however steer clear of the tap beer which tends to be on the warm, flat side.

Dave Entwistle (formerly of Butterspy) opened the musical portion of the night with a solo offering of his cool songs. He was joined in the end by Mark of Crewman Number Six on cajon and Jaime Rose of The Fave on tambourine. Ross got up for an improvised rap before delivering treats from his new CD ‘Oranges, Yellows’. He was joined by Tom Mulaney (bass) and Bob Ramos (Drums).

They called themselves Tom Bob Ross and the trio felt tight and comfortable. That comes from Tom and Bob having played together for years. A very good opportunity for any rhythm section to take advantage of. Ross would join in from time to time, building a catalog of songs and a performance ease. Later he joked that the band has probably had six or seven ‘first’ shows.

The transition to the next act was seamless. As Crewman Number Six set up to play, Bob kept the beat going. Ross put down his guitar and grabbed the mic, since he fronts the band after all. This was a rare acoustic set from the band and their songs lost nothing in the translation. Closing out the night in their usual vivacious and fun fashion was The Fave.

My night ended with a trip upstairs to the larger lounge area of Fat baby to meet my friends Jennifer and Courtney. The room was jumping to a classic 80s mix. We had a blast singing along and reminiscing about all things Cure and Tears for Fears. As Courtney and I sang along in our seats, Jennifer and my friend Denis were cutting up the floor for a bit.

Before leaving, I popped back down to the basement to say some goodbyes. The dance party had migrated to now encompass the entire bar. I feel like I should check this place out other than when seeing bands. It looks like it could be fun. I’ll just remember to stick to the mixed drinks and avoid the beer.
