Live at Continental, NYC

Romania is best known for its Monasteries, the Danube Delta and Vlad the Impaler. Now add to that list the music of Gelu Sulugiuc.

Riding the range between a crystal blue calm and a fevered riptide, balanced on sturdy songs, we find Gelu’s vehicle in the form of Automatic Slim.

This is the first time I’ve technically heard the band even though they rehearse in my basement. Vibrating floors and rattling pipes do not make for a good sound system.

The guitar and vocals are filled with a sophisticated vigor strapped to a tight backbeat provided by Nelson Pla on drums and Greta Brinkman on bass. Moods shift effortlessly but never too abruptly.

Now if Gelu can keep from biting my neck, we’ll get along just fine.
