Minimal drums, distorted bass, dissonant guitar and the skin-crawl disturbance of a grunting man. There is an amazing level of creativity here.

The opening guitar riff of ‘Honkey Donkey’ is reminiscent of sixties bubblegum pop, but that doesn’t last for long. Minimal drums, distorted bass and dissonance are just the start of the twists. Twists that include the skin-crawl disturbance of a grunting man juxtaposed against an innocent-little-girl vocal tone.

There is an amazing level of creativity on 2004’s ‘The Laughing Stock of Indie Rock’, from Amsterdam’s Elisabeth Esselink–the mastermind behind Solex. Such as her use of these mystery male vocals. Apparently, she once received a CD of an Australian guy–whom she’d never met–singing the entire ‘White Album’ a cappella.

This incredible level of experimentation that weaves thru all of the songs pushed the album just far enough over the edge to suck me in.
