As part of the MurphGuide.com Irish Road Trip & Pub Tour, I had the pleasure of catching a set of music by Gavin Moore. Not knowing too much about the tiny town of Clonakilty, this evening came highly recommended by fellow travelers and locals alike.

Some of us were curious to hear him simply due to his famous uncles Luka Bloom and Christy Moore. I hate making such comparisons when talking about music and thankfully Gavin stands out on his own merits. With an already firm grasp on imagery as well as melody, this young man will do just fine with no nepotism needed.

The songs on his debut CD ‘Until Today’ are quite moving and the support band adds both solidity and warmth to the depth and emotion. One particular standout—both on the CD and this night at De Barra’s—is the tasteful guitar work of Matt Churchill.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Gavin briefly about a recent visit to NYC where he performed at, of all places, Arlene Grocery. “How’d that go?” I asked already knowing the answer. “Not so good,” he replied. I gave him a card and told him to contact me whenever he returned to NYC. Maybe I could try to get him into a venue more suited for his music.
