Elf Power @ Mercury Lounge

A great set of music to start off my week

Even I find it hard to believe that I’d never been to the Mercury Lounge (217 E Houston St, NYC) before tonight. Upon the advice of my friend Nelson Pla of the band clueLess, I was here to see Elf Power who were in town from Athens, GA.

There was an oddly high number of folks who seemingly had never been to see a band in a bar before. You know the types. They stand like statues, rigidly holding their ground as if that were the point of being there. I actually had to push one such guy so I could get by to take pictures. But I digress…

The show was fantastic. Elf Power’s tight songs and fluid rhythms took on a new life with the heightened dynamics of a live performance. In the end I tried to talk to singer Andrew Rieger when some socially-awkward, rude guy jumped in front of me to talk Andrew about Al Gore or something.
