Taxes and Procrastination

Why do today what can be put off until tomorrow

I’m a chronic procrastinator, always have been. My motto is, “Why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.” Everyone tries to avoid those unpleasant deeds in life. However, here’s what I don’t get about myself, I’ll put off things that are potentially good for me or fun or financially beneficial.

  • I should call that girl I met …
  • I’m gonna start to exercise more and eat better …
  • I should file my taxes early since I’ll be getting
    a sweet refund …

It’s that last one that sticks out right now. Here it is the day before taxes are due and I just mailed out the forms. I’ve been wallowing in a mass of free time since leaving my last job in early March. I’ve had the software (yes I do my own taxes … gasp) and all of the needed forms for months now. I only owed about $50 total to NY & NJ and was set to get back over $850 from the feds.

So why wait? If I knew that answer I’d be a healthier, wealthier and wiser man for sure. But as it stands I simply and inexplicably let things go. Sometimes until it’s too late to act. I have a string of lost jobs and failed romances that can be directly tied to this condition.

Some may say that I do this purposely. As if the ease of failure outweighs the strain of work no matter what the payoff may have been in the end. And yes I know I should take the time to figure this out. Perhaps even go to a therapist for assistance. After all, it has not done much more than cause me pain and suffering.

So I will do something to help myself … tomorrow … next Tuesday the latest.
