RIP Cory Baker

Bassist, friend passed away Sunday May 25, 2008

No matter what I hear from anyone, I will prefer to remember that guy in that bar who knew just what to say and do to help me.

OK, to call Cory my ‘friend’ would be a stretch I admit. Yes, ever since he signed up as bassist for High Speed Chase, we hung out and always had a good time. But I couldn’t even remember his last name when I heard the news of his passing. Still there were these moments that he helped me. For example, I was at a bar in North Carolina last year sulking in my beer after a breakup.

While I was having a heart to heart with my buddy, High Speed Chase frontman Gibby, Cory bounded into the room. He was spewing inappropriate jokes loudly and laughing in his own maniacal way about some unfortunate–yet in retrospect quite comical–circumstances that my ex had found herself in.

Gibby was worried that this would upset me more. Instead, the spotlight Cory had shined onto the lunacy of the whole situation made me start to laugh. At which point he put his arm around me and said in all seriousness, “Now aren’t you glad you got out when you did.”

After leaving this world, stories have begun to spin about Cory. Many good, some not so good. He had his demons that only those closest to him ever really saw. Demons that finally got the best of him. But for those moments that he and I hung out, I can tell you that his best was pretty fucking good.

No matter what I hear from anyone, I will prefer to remember that guy in that bar who knew just what to say and do to help me.
