clueLess in Washington DC

No, this is not a commentary on the current (and let’s face it … constant) state of our government

Although with the course of events thus far in the Bush era it would be an easy road to take. But I’ll resist the urge.

In this particular instance, clueLess refers to the unique east-meets-west acoustic blend of brothers Nelson and Joe Pla. This ultra-mini vacation took me to DC and College Park for tunes, drinks and visiting old friends.

On the first night, we were at Staccato (2006 18th St NW Washington, DC). A decent little bar on the tail end of the Adams Morgan section of the city. An area dotted with trendy places including several Ethiopian joints, upscale lounges and a few odd combos such as Italian/Thai and Chinese/Pizza. Oh and if you have a perverted hankering for wretched yet extremely large slices of pizza, check out Jumbo Slice.

Staccato looks like a new place, or at least newly renovated. My glass kept sticking to the fresh varnish on the bar. Punk rock memorabilia all around the walls, a couple of cool paintings, good sound and strong drinks. One caveat; don’t leave your money on the bar for more than a few moments. I went outside to take a phone call and the bartender must have thought I was a very good tipper.

Later that night we met friends at the Hawk ‘n’ Dove for burgers, drinks and healthy debating. Though admittedly we were often on the same side of the argument. It’s a popular hotspot for barhoppers and pundits alike.

The next day played tourist in the oppressive heat before moving on to College Park, MD. Much of the time was spent in refreshing air conditioning of the Library of Congress.
