Halloween Costume Ball

Hoboken rocks the Beelmedia Loft in full regalia

Music, food, booze and costumes. This was a fun night to say the least but it’s a night that had me kinda stressing out for a few days. You see, we were all told by our hosts Bill and Frank that anyone not in costume would be penalized.

This was a fun night to say the least but it’s a night that had me kinda stressing out for a few days. You see, we were all told by our hosts Bill and Frank that anyone not in costume would be penalized. I’m not one to normally dress up in costume so I was nervous because just what the penalty would be, they were not saying. At first I thought they may just charge a little more to get in.

As it was it would cost only $10 for open bar, food and live music. So if they charged even twice that as a ‘punishment’ it would be more than worth it. After all, having to buy a costume would cost a whole lot more than that. But it could easily have been something really humiliating like stamping your forehead instead of your hand or whatever. Then it hit me … I know I have some embarrassing items I could combine into an acceptable costume.

Into the closet I searched and sure enough I found it. This old gray wig I once wore to a friends ‘Over the Hill’ themed birthday party. In the box was an old pair of blue-blocker style of sports sunglasses. The wheels were turning in my head now. Ripped jeans, ripped tee, same old Salvation Army suit jacket I usually wear and … PRESTO … I had my costume. With the addition of a scarily realistic fake cigarette, I called it ‘Me Twenty Years from Now’ or ‘Tale of a Washed up Hoboken Rocker’.

The night was filled with impressive costumes but the most surprising was my friend Stephanie, whose camera I borrowed for the evening. She was teasing and hinting at various costume ideas all week on the phone, but when she got out of the taxi as my ever-loving pregnant, beaten, alcoholic, white-trash wife … I nearly fell over. And that was just the beginning. We would have a fantastic time as the party went on. People really went all out. My buddy Denis put together this full-on hippy get up right before the party.

Plenty of booze, delicious food as usual and great bands continue to make Bill and Frank’s monthly shindigs the most anticipated events in town. As Stephanie and I mingled, we snapped pictures and wandered into some other apartment from time to time where they were serving Jello shots and I played with a cute little dog. Occasionally ending up outside, playfully taunting passersby. Back at the party, the incognito crowd rocked to the bands.

Lloyd United, Billy Pilgrim (not really their name, they’re still deciding), The Fave and The Coffin Daggers kept the room groovin’. The official last song of the night was a pleasant surprise as The Coffin Daggers ripped into a killer version of Pink Floyd’s ‘Interstellar Overdrive’. But the music kept going as Fen from Lloyd United and Stephanie lead a sing along with a small crowd in the stairwell.

It was just the thing we needed to close out the night. I never quite figured out what to ‘no costume’ penalty was though. Oh well.
