A reintroduction and a new discovery

From raw to theatrical to passionate, tonight host Dave Entwistle and his Hoboken Unsigned series continued to expose the public to new talent. This was the fourth installment at The Goldhawk and fun as ever.

One mystery trying to be solved was the last time Lanky and I played together. We laid out the facts. It was at The Liberty Bar here in Hoboken. I was playing in my band called Ya-Ne-Zniyoo. He used to have a band called Lanky and at that point in time had gone solo but kept the name. After a few pints of deduction, we figured it must have been about five or six years ago. Whatever, it was nice catching up and to hear him play again.

Lanky started out in New Jersey but has been living in Nashville for a few months now. In between he was in Houston for a while and traveling around with his guitar and his songs. He’s a storyteller calling himself an ‘inner onwriter’ rather than a singer songwriter. There is a rawness to his delivery that blends nicely with his down to earth tales of life and love. By the end of the set his fiery banging of the guitar finally popped a string. Up next was the pop flavored theatrical sounds of Hoboken’s own Mere. Though not my cup of tea, they certainly packed a lot of power into their acoustic set.

Closing out the night was Amanda Kaletsky who was a truly delightful surprise. Hailing from Connecticut, she joked that someone once told her to say she was from Boston because it sounds cooler. Well after hearing her sing, I told her being from Connecticut was plenty cool. Honestly she could have been from just about anywhere, it would be just as cool. Amanda is a powerhouse. Jumping from guitar to piano and back, she delivered a wonderful set of songs simply and tastefully built around passion and melody. I’m looking forward to hearing more from her soon.

Well done Hoboken Unsigned … once again. In fact, this was so much fun that I wound up leaving in such a cloud, I forgot to pay my tab. D’OH! Luckily I remembered the second I stepped foot into the next bar and it was early enough to get back and settle up. And to have one more pint of course.
