Live at The Rodeo/Ristra Lounge Hoboken, NJ
I’ve often wrestled with the notion that what I do as a musician and a writer is, well, pointless and somewhat unimportant. I mean what is it really but me just being a big child play-acting? I make up stories, I jump around with a guitar and I have fun. But then a day like this one particular Saturday in Hoboken comes along and, even if just for a brief moment, I see the value in what musicians and writers do. We can bring a sense of pleasure to those around us. We can spark debates about world issues. We can even help to save lives.
Unity: Together for Tomorrow was a benefit put together by Sandra Roberts and Ivy, who are both very active in the area music and art scene. Its purpose was to raise money and awareness for those around the world who are in need of food and shelter. In the wake of Sept. 11th, we need to open our eyes, ears and hearts to the needs of everyone. Of course, with winter’s cold harsh reality just around the corner, this is more important that ever.
The Ristra Lounge, a venue fast becoming one of the most important homes to local art and music, hosted the event. Our emcee for the day was Chris Gibson, owner of Upstart Studios.
The day was filled with an electricity that was magical. As each performer got up to do his or her thing, the crowd grooved to the energy of emoting poets and rocking bands. Not to mention doling out some impressive coinage by buying food, raffle tickets, band merchandise and special T-shirts designed by artist Angie Mason.
The event raised over $1100.00 for UNICEF, UNHCR, The Hoboken Shelter and The Hoboken Food Pantry. Thanks to everyone for their time and generosity.
