Don’t let the paper table coverings fool you…
While covering tables with large sheets of white paper is usually reserved for cheap fish joints in a shore town, The Elysian Cafe is actually a very decent place. I’ve eaten here before but tonight my friend Kristine and I came to sip cocktails and enjoy the cool samba-flavored tunes of Las Vandelays.
The back room where bands play every Thursday has a very surreal feel to it. White sculpted walls with blue neon lights shining upwards are offset by the orange glow of the glass and metal chandeliers. The wall opposite where the band sets up is a cushy dark green adding more contrast.
The music of Las Vandelays fills this space nicely, allowing the listener to get lost in a series of relaxing moments. You’re no longer in windy, cold Hoboken but some cafe in springtime Paris. Well, not that I have any point of reference for this, but it’s my fantasy so I’m running with it. But Paris or Hoboken, a night like this is one that should happen more often.
