Celebrating Frank’s birthday at the Hoboken Museum

In a sea of fedoras, sound-alike singers did their very best to impress a panel of judges. The range of contestants included a young Cuban guy, the son of one of the original Hoboken Four and beyond. And while Frank Sinatra may be Hoboken’s favorite son (next to me of course), the short supply of wine made it clear that no one expected the place to get as crowded as it did.

The event was set up like ‘American Idol’ but thankfully without the abusive verbal critiques. Instead the whole thing felt more like a family picnic with everyone laughing, dancing and just having a fun time. I also noticed that the scores just seemed to get higher with each performance, regardless of actual quality. And no, the judges were not drinking the wine.

As much fun as this was, I was getting hungry so I didn’t stay until the end. I’m not sure who won or what the prize even was, but these details didn’t really matter. This was a very unique, light-hearted way for the city of Hoboken and the Hoboken Historical Museum to honor the life and work of Frank Sinatra. In that regard, it was a brilliant success.
