Celebrating the release of ‘Watch Him Fall’

I first met Noah at Carpe Diem in Hoboken where he tends bar. Sadly it’s been a while since I’ve been there. Tonight I was at Maxwell’s (1039 Washington St, Hoboken) to join in celebrating the release of Noah’s debut CD called ‘Watch Him Fall’. He asked me to give him a juicy quote to use on his website. I replied, “That in itself will be your quote!”

Tonight is the first time I’m seeing Noah with a full band. I’ve seen him solo a couple of times. The material is a well balanced mix that is both playful and mature. There’s bit of folk and rock mixed together with an almost sea shanty feel. You know, that certain Irish sensibility that reminds you of an early morning fog rolling over the bow of an old fishing boat. Not that I’ve done much fishing myself.

Noah’s band was made up of John Michael Jeliffe (Bass), Steve Wheeler (Drums), Rob Giraldi (Guitar), Danny Golub (Keyboards, Background Vocals & Cajon) and Mike Drucker (Violin). Noah and Mike met when they worked on a film together several years ago, but the rest of the band was assembled specifically to record this CD. They are all students at SUNY-Purchase and I was amazed by their poise and talent at such young ages.

Also on the bill for the night was a band called ‘Out of the Box’. Now I have to admit that I didn’t care very much for their somewhat lack-luster heavy pop sound. Still they were very tight and the singer had fantastic stage presence. He was a master of the funny and succinct banter which entertained their very boisterous crowd of friends and fans. It’s a talent that far too few lead singers have. This was also a crowd that liked to drink. A big plus for any bar.
