When not being able to sleep is a good thing
I spent the day with my family stuffing myself with hamburgers, steak, chicken, various salads and deserts. You know, the traditional method of celebrating my American freedoms. On my way back to my apartment in Hoboken, I felt myself falling asleep behind the wheel.
Despite how tired I thought I was, I was wide awake as soon as my head hit the pillow. I tossed and turned for about a half hour but by 12:45 AM, I just had to get up. My plan was to walk to Maxwell’s, get two pints of Guinness and then come back and try sleep again.
Unfortunately Maxwell’s was packed so I waked on by and peeked into the 8th Street Tavern which is always empty. As I sat there and sipped on my drink, I realized that it was too empty. I was bored and decided to walk to Louise & Jerry’s.
Once there I was met by a bunch of the usual faces and ordered a Jack & Coke. Seeing that it was already after 1:00, I really was not expecting much from the night. Yet for the less than two hours I was there, I had some fantastic conversations with two new people.
Mike and I, for some odd reason, got on the subjects of religion, politics and the expansion of the universe. Then I met Jeorgia who shared my taste in literature. She was trying to get me to remember a certain book title. Of course, I forgot it.
As I walked home with my friends Lauren and Aileen and this other new guy Dennis (I think was his name) that I met, I reflected on just how productive these mere two hours had been. And for once I can give credit for a good night to my insomnia instead of blaming it for aching bones and disturbing semi-conscious dreams.
