The hurdy-gurdy is one of those rare instruments whose name evokes its sound (or vice-versa). You even know it when you just see it. Wood, crank, strings, keys. It’s patchwork appearance is as distinctive as the music created in the right hands.

Russian-born musician Andrey Vinogradov studied a variety of musical genres in his lifetime from classical to jazz to rock. He has taken those influences and formulated a unique take on the traditional Russian folk sound, at times incorporating electronic music with that of his hurdy-gurdy.

The blend created on his album ‘Russian Hurdy-Gurdy Tunes’ with fellow musicians Sergey Vinogradov (keyboards) and Masha Vinogradova (buffalo drum) is hypnotic. If your only exposure to this instrument has been Page/Plant ‘Unledded’ and you liked it, then you need to check this album out.
