Lamp Post, Jersey City

A music hot spot & local watering hole
This latest ‘improvised’ live room is a little bit outta the way but worth the trip

Jersey City’s latest music hot spot & watering hole

It’s a little bit outta the way if you’re coming from NYC or Hoboken, but well worth the trip. Under new management since Fall ’07, the Lamp Post (382 2nd St, Jersey City) has classic neighborhood sports-bar crossed with old-school eatery décor and cheap drinks served with a welcoming smile. Better still, they feature live, local music on the weekends.

Barkeep and booker Joe Condiracci–formerly of (now defunct) Uncle Joe’s, The (now disgraced) Corkscrew and a brilliant singer/songwriter in his own right–has been an advocate for local music for many years. He describes what they’re doing here as Jersey City’s latest ‘improvised’ live music room. Knowing the often troubling history of Jersey City venues, I hope this one sticks around for a while.

The atmosphere certainly lends itself to a free-form, easy-going feel as bands set up on the floor in front of the kitchen. Not to mention the sneaky bits of kitsch strewn about, such as the festive rat and amputated leg over the front door.

Behind the bar, they mix drinks like a local watering hole should–strong and cheap.

On the night I was there, the musical distractions were provided by Kate Hedman, clueLess and Lloyd United. I got there a little late so I missed Kate’s set (sorry).

I highly recommend making the trip to this place. Depending on the weather, you could walk from the Grove St. PATH (about 10 mins) or take a cab for a few bucks. Click below to see the photos from my night out.
