Live Music at Louise & Jerry’s?

A rare night of live entertainment. I honestly can’t remember who was actually scheduled to play and who just got up and started rockin’.

Feb 18, 2010: When I say this is rare, I’m not exaggerating. In fact, it is on such rare occasions to have live music Louise & Jerry’s (329 Washington St, Hoboken) that few could remember the last time it happened. I drew a blank. Some others would hazard guesses. Yet no one knew for sure. So why break from the habit of dive-bar frivolity and jukebox heroism? Simple this; why not?

Marc Giannotti of the band End of October—and countless solo performances in and around Hoboken—arranged this special night at Louise & Jerry’s. His intention was to have a loose night of fun and music with several scheduled acts followed by whoever wanted to do whatever. A sorta hybrid open mic/showcase night.

The thinking was that having a bunch of guitar-slung musicians hanging around would, at the very least, add about a half dozen more drinkers to the bar. That is if nobody but the usual crowd shows. Well, of course more friends/fans did show making this a real win/win situation.

Of all the nights that have come and gone in Hoboken, the most successful were ones where both promoter and venue understood the math. Musicians get cheap drinks. Patrons do the same with added entertainment. New patrons get turned on to the place. Bar makes more money than it normally would.

Marc is hoping to do this on a monthly basis, as long as it can stay this chill and relaxed. This is exactly what this town needs. As music still struggles to find a place in this society of ours, the little victories will make all the difference.

Playing tonight was a cavalcade of local favorites. I honestly can’t remember who was actually scheduled to play and who just got up and started rockin’.

If we can do this once a month, I will be a very happy camper.
