A good concept that could be better

Myspace has this new thing called The List. They describe it as:

Featuring footage of exclusive performances from the hottest bands, come and check out The List. Maybe you can even get on The List to see it live.

So, I decided to check it out. The first set of videos was from Green Day. Now, I ask you … does MySpace really think Green Day needs this kind of help? Also on this ‘cutting-edge’ list are The Fray, Coldplay, Weezer, Kanye West and Metalica … to name a few. But what about all of the bands that made MySpace popular in the first place and signaling the end of big record labels?

With a reputation for being one of the best sites to discover independent music, MySpace needs to keep giving consideration to those unknown artists. They are the reason why I’m still on MySpace. I mean, Facebook is cool for finding that old girlfriend you used to date (and later stalk) in high school and now you make kind comments about their baby or dog or whatever knowing deep inside that you wish it could all be different. Sorry … where was I? Oh yeah.

MySpace needs to not worry so much about big-name bands that don’t need help. They need to give that help to the lessor-known bands that are keeping their site somewhat relevant. They need to stop their corporate structure from completely eating away at what’s left of their coolness factors.

Corporate intervention always kills art. MySpace will be no different.
