That guy on the bass looks a lot like me but, he is NOT me
There has been this strange history of rumors about me hovering around Hoboken. They’re all kinda silly—laughable in fact. I’m apparently gay but, at the same time, I beat up guys for flirting with any girl I date. I’ve had people tell me how great I sounded singing at some party when I was ninety miles away at the time.
This latest one has its origins in a harmless practical joke. Take a good look again at the above photo. When I saw it, even I had to wonder if it was me. Did I have a second life as a bass player? Wait … I don’t play bass. I’ve never played bass. Guitar, yes but not for quite a while now.
Photoshop? Nope. It’s a photo of the Jersey City band Thomas Francis Takes His Chances. It was posted on Facebook by my friend David Ribyat with the caption, “Stephen Bailey playing bass in his secret band??”
Well, it’s not me. It’s not my band. The bass player’s name is … um … I actually don’t know. You see, on the band’s MySpace page, next to each member’s name, it simply says, “makes noise.” An accurate albeit cryptic description.
As for the band, their music is hard to describe. There’s a myriad of influences at play here that swirl into cacophonous jams, noise-pop melodies, and hippie-prog rock. In other words, really fun stuff.
So, now that I’ve outed my doppelganger, I’ll have to check these guys out more. And, if there are people out there who still think this is me, then I take that as a compliment. Although, I still don’t play the bass.
