5th Street and Ocean Ave, Asbury Park, NJ
We’d find ourselves here a couple of times on this short trip. It’ my kinda place. Loose, rough around the edges but welcoming … and cheap. It’s been here forever. It’s got this dive bar meets funhouse feel that hearkens back to an older time in Asbury Park. Still attracting impressive touring bands, it’s also a local fave with happy hours for the human clientele and yappy hour for their canine counterparts.
As expected, the conversation and music often turn to Bruce Springsteen. Both nights were no exception. On our last night, I felt my trip was complete as Thunder Road came on the juke box. Nothing says a good Jersey time than the collision of a half dozen drunken renditions of this anthem into one cacophonous pile of joy. It happens everywhere, but means so much more here.
