‘Ravesend Excess’ by Psychic Health
‘Ravesend Excess’ is the fourth full-length release from the Los Angeles-based electronic duo Psychic Health. It’s also the first time I’ve ever heard them. Thanks to my well-trained social algorithms, a video of theirs showed up on my feed. I was immediately fascinated. It led me to click on another, then another. I was drawn in by their trippy, ambient soundscapes.
Known for their brooding techno structures and post-industrial
ambience, Psychic Health craft music with hardware synthesis,
external effects, and transformer saturation. – Bandcamp
Some further delving lead me to learn that this particular album was built from improvisational live performances, giving it a more natural feel than the usual industrial or techno fare. Their sound is referred to as ‘electronic drift’ in other write-ups. Admittedly I’m not well-versed in the the terminology, but what it says to me is that the music moves, morphs, and blends.
I could be wrong, but it seems like a logical conclusion because that’s what their sound actually does. Using synthesizers, drum machines, outboard effects, and the like can often result in a cold, soulless sound. However that definitely isn’t the case here. The progression of each track clearly shows the presence of a human touch. They develop and evolve into well-constructed and inspired collages of musical and rhythmic sounds.
Check out ‘Ravesend Excess’ by Psychic Health as well as their other releases now on Bandcamp.
Cheers!
