Music Spotlight: ‘Some Blue Heaven’ by luah

Deeply moody, emotionally moving, and deceptively simple songs rooted in songwriting tradition.

The music of luah comes from the mind of Kingston NY based musician & artist Brendan P. Sullivan. The writing reminds me of Leonard Cohen and the sound reminds me of The Sundays. The songs on Some Blue Heaven are deeply moody, emotionally moving, and deceptively simple. Firmly rooted in tradition with a grasp on innovation. The production — equally lush and spartan — lulls the listener into a world of tenderness and longing.

Sullivan plays almost all of the instruments with the exception of sax and additional guitars on several tracks provided by Matthew Fox. Included in the mix of traditional folk rock instrumentation and introspective vocals are splashes of various sounds swaying in the background. With each listen something new will come into the foreground.

I’m a sucker for a well written song that takes unexpected turns along the way. Combining styles rather than following a formula. This is an excellent collection of sensitive, affectionate, and alluring songs. Released on wooley wooleySome Blue Heaven is available on Bandcamp.

Cheers!
