Animation Spotlight: Inventive, Informative ‘Family Fun With Cosmo’

Amazingly creative videos filled with cuteness and information to make you smile and learn.

I recently came across ‘Family Fun With Cosmo‘ by an Australian animator who creates adorable and incredibly creative stop-motion animated shorts inspired by conversations with his young daughter. The way his fuzzy li’l characters interact with the natural world, the syncing of the voices taken from the actual recordings with his daughter, the movement of their shadows, and how real life creatures in the scenes seem to react to them is all so remarkably well done. Just watch the video below.

I was also impressed with the educational aspect found in these videos. In fact I was torn between calling this an ‘Animation Spotlight’ and an ‘Education Spotlight’. The scenes could’ve all been just played off for humor. Take a silly question, put cute characters in awkward situations, and let loose. But that’s not what this creator did. There’s a warmth to the interactions, an intentional slowness. There’s also an abundance of information that any child can find amusing and useful. Some adults, too I bet.

Questions like:
– Hey Cosmo, what is a VHS tape?
– Hey Cosmo, who invented donuts?
– Hey Cosmo, why are cats so sleepy?
– and so on . . .

I’m assuming the father’s name is Cosmo. The child begins every question with a lively, “Hey Cosmo.” Then again, she is at times referred to as Little Cosmo. Anyhoo, these delightful, mini conversations flow so naturally. The way curiosity and excitement of youth are met by the patience and understanding. The parent then gives calm, straight forward answers. There’s a tangible desire to teach in these videos and an infectious playfulness as the youngster has a tendency to break into song. For example, watch the video below.

At the time of posting, I wasn’t able to gather any information of the creator behind ‘Family Fun With Cosmo‘, but that’s OK. The important thing is the intent behind the content. These are a joy to watch and you can show your support of this series on thru Patreon on their website.

“It can be hard to find something nice to watch online these days with your kids, so know that with your help we can be that warm comforting place you can go and relax.” ~ Cosmo
