Bookstore Spotlight: The Lost Bookshop, Delhi NY

Cozy shop with an impressively wide selection of books and a sense of community

I decided to take a quick drive to checkout The Lost Bookshop (120 Main St Delhi NY), recommended by Vincent of Stamford Coffee (79 Main Street Stamford NY). The name lends itself to getting lost in the stacks, in a book, or in a conversation. A very cute little independent shop with an impressively wide selection of books. Carefully curated by the shop owners with personal recommendations from locals. Cozy and welcoming, I could feel a real sense of community as locals and tourists alike strolled in and out of the door.

Adding to this feeling of community, there was an adorable two-year-old foster cat named Bay cuddled on a chair. Visiting from Heart of the Catskills Humane Society, she’s looking for a home.

The proprietor Emily used to live in Jersey City. It seems a good handful of people I’ve met in the area had at one time or another lived in either Jersey City or Hoboken. Yet another sign I should consider relocating. We had a fun conversation about how Delhi — in comparison to Hobart or Stamford, and being the seat of Delaware County — is considered an urban center. Especially on a Wednesday (the day I was there) since that is market day, referring to the Delhi Farmers’ Market.

I didn’t get a chance to visit as I arrived late in the afternoon, but the farmers’ market is a popular local attraction. Farm-fresh produce, pasture-raised meats, baked goods, jams, honey, maple products, herbal remedies, crafts, and more from over 60 regional vendors. Open from 10am – 2pm, their location changes seasonally. November – April it is held indoors at the Delhi American Legion. May – October it is held outdoors at Courthouse Square.

While there was a bit of a bustle to the town, Emily and I agreed that compared to Jersey City or Hoboken, Delhi is still fairly rural. Anyway, it was time to head back to Hobart, but my quick stroll along the main street here in Delhi confirms a future trip should be to explore more of this area. Cute galleries and cafes, small shops and the nearby college of SUNY Delhi definitely give the area a life and character all it’s own.

The book I picked up was ‘Einstein’s Dreams’ by Alan Lightman. Set in Bern, Switzerland in 1905, it is a fictional collage of stories dreamed by then patent clerk Albert Einstein. In these dreams, young Einstein imagines many different worlds. Time is circular in one and stands still in another. Some of the dreams are purely theoretical and abstract. Yet another book that appeals to my inner (and outer) nerd.

I highly recommend you visit The Lost Bookshop the next time you’re in the Delhi area. However, if you can’t make to Delhi, you can also shop online at bookshop.org/shop/thelostbookshop.

Hours of Operation:
Wednesday – Sunday 10am – 5pm

Cheers!
Stephen
