A quirky, bombastic, and remarkably centered sophisticated noise from The Outer Banks of North Carolina
Thanks to the social media powers that be for feeding me ‘Year Of The Horse‘ (2026) by Cor de Lux. What a fun ride this one is. I was immediately struck by the crafty, playful opening guitar riff of ‘Blind Smile’. As the vocals come in and the music builds, counterpoint and interplay grow and fall away. Then the listener is smacked by a driving, dramatic attack. The energy throughout the album is reminiscent of 90s noise rock but different, new.
From Kill Devil Hills on The Outer Banks of North Carolina, Cor de Lux make a quirky, bombastic, and remarkably centered, melodic noise. There is a level of sophistication and depth that exists side by side with intensity and dynamics. There is a definite prog rock influence as well. Intertwining harmonic flights over engaging beats with poignant vocals. Each track is an epic tale with many ups and downs, twists and turns.
“4 friends in a Post Punk-Noise Rock band. Melodic hints and synth tones that trickle into a garage angst progressive fury.” – Bandcamp
Something I’ve always loved about this style of post-hardcore, guitar-driven sound are the sonic layers that build and deflect, crumble and emote. Growing and turning in unexpected ways. This album has that on full display with a maturity and control that keep it all from flying out of control. It’s showing the natural evolution of the style as otherworldly elements get placed in line with the dissonance and tension. The reverberating walls of the garage are still there, now made bigger with more refined traits of a larger world view.
A delightful and engaging trip, ‘Year Of The Horse‘ by Cor de Lux is available on Bandcamp.
A bit of trivia; The band’s name is Latin for ‘Light within the Heart’.
Cheers!
