The bar … not the cat and mouse

My friend Aaron is moving to New Orleans. He’s been wanting to get out of New York for a while now to finish work on a film and settle into a new frame of life. To celebrate this decision, a bunch of us met at Tom & Jerry (288 Elizabeth St, NYC).

From the outside the place may seem like any other small NYC bar. That is until you open the door. It’s like an old warehouse with super high ceilings. The tall shelves behind the bar display a myriad of ceramic bowls and cups inscribed with the bar’s namesake cartoon critters.

The long, dark wooden bar has that old NY feel as do the rickety chairs around the tables lining the space. The use of a church pew as a bench in the back under the large projection screen is a nice touch. This is a classic dive with prices to match, a welcoming character and an interesting assortment of patrons. Business types, artists, hipsters, musicians and–on this night–four dogs of varied shapes and sizes.

Aaron chose the place for more than the ambiance however. He worked on a film that was set here. I think one of the bartenders was the costume designer. Oh, did I mention Aaron is a very talented filmmaker? That’s actually how we met. Not on the film shot here, but as part of another production team back in 2006.

I’m hoping to get to New Orleans to visit soon. In the meantime, I’m happy to have been introduced me to this new spot. Well new for me at least.

sorry the photos are kinda dark :0(
