This was the first night of live music ever at a dance club called Duvel Lounge (240 Dayton Ave. Clifton, NJ) and it was sponsored by Hipnosis Magazine. A very interesting space with loads of potential. Velvet drapery, abstract paintings and a gold antique sofa accented the dark, gothic design of the front bar. Unique, large metal sconces and stone-faced busts adorned the walls while some quality Anime played on the two television screens. The back room was well suited for live music with a small, but not too small, stage and crowd space. A tasteful use of stage smoke added to the very impressive, albeit dizzying, light show.
The bands that performed were:
– Ya-Ne-Zniyoo, my own band less our injured bassist.
– Edible Red who added a hauntingly well-crafted cello to their sound.
– Kidney Thieves who rocked us with their memorable tunes.
Because this was their first foray into the realm of live music, the night did have its share of technical difficulties. Luckily, a very open and friendly staff made those obstacles easier to endure. Another slight problem lies in the club’s location. Tucked away in the Botany Village area of Clifton, this is a tough place to find for those unfamiliar with the neighborhood. Even with printed directions from the club’s web site, it was easy to get turned around and lose one’s way. Once you get there, though, the parking is ample and safe.
So, with just a little more work and well orchestrated publicity, the Hipnosis Magazine sponsored Wednesdays at Duvel could prove to be a magnificent showcase for live performances.
