Suddenly Single: Part 2

My friend Noah chimes in with another great reply

Noah Gittell is on the fast track to being a regular contributor to this site. Below is his take on my questions about women and dating in Hoboken. I of course left his kind words about me in tact because, well … my ego needed the boost.

Great update, as always, Stephen. I love reading this stuff.

I had a thought I wanted to share about your new condition of being single. Keep in mind this is coming from a man who, though he may be a decade younger, is clearly more bitter than yourself. In my experience, even though they would never say this, women don’t want a nice guy who respects them and makes them laugh. They want to be able to SAY they want a nice guy who respects them and makes them laugh.

They want to bitch about the fact that there are no nice guys out there, because if they found a nice guy, they would have nothing left to bitch about. It’s a bit like how Met fans don’t really want the Mets to be better than the Yankees because hating the Yankees is such an integral part of their personality. Or how the Republican party doesn’t really want to overturn Roe v. Wade because they would lose one of their major issues.

We all have our ways of making ourselves feel superior, which inevitably is a defense mechanism, needed to mask our own insecurity. God forbid we should actually find the right person because…what if we fucked it up?

Amen man!

In mid-June Noah will leave his bartending post at Hoboken’s Carpe Diem to work on the John Edwards presidential campaign in Iowa. At that time he will also begin his new role as contributor to this site. I’m very excited about this and, as always, look forward to his words of insight, wisdom and humor.
