BlowUpRadio.com serves up yet another great night of music with their Folk You series at The Goldhawk (936 Park Ave, Hoboken). To night we have Alana Q (Six to Eight Mathematics), Souls Release and Drew Hawthorne.

Alana turns down the volume but does not tone down the intensity of her songs. She treated us to a brand new song. She only wrote it the day before and not even the band had heard it yet.

Souls Release had decent songs and strong vocals. The drummer joked that his kick, snare, hat and ride was his Neil Peart set-up. I love how they just look like they’re having fun. As a tribute to Independence Day they did ‘Revolution’. “We live in the greatest country on the planet,” the singer said, “but with really fucked up leaders.”

Drew Hawthorne was kinda folky meets 80s new wave aesthetic. His high voice and very percussive guitar style were wrapped nicely in respectable tunes. He joked that wearing a ‘wife-beater’ made him look like a child molester. I clapped. The reaction I got made me feel as though that was wrong.

Drew’s last song had no title. One guy in the crowd yelled out, “How ’bout ‘Child Molester’?” Again I clapped and again it was apparently the wrong thing to do. Oh well.
