Beer Pressure at Desmond’s

What happened when I ignored my impulse to say no

I just wanted to go home, write a little and sleep a lot. But that’s not how it would be.

What happened when I ignored my impulse to say no

“No, really. I don’t wanna go out,” I protested. I was perfectly content with the cocktail my coworker Ilana had made me that I was sipping at my desk. I had been out every night this week and really just wanted to go home, write a little and sleep a lot. However, my friends Devin and David would not hear it.

I’m not exactly sure what it was. The marble under my feet, the freezer-like conditions from the overburdened air conditioning or just the knowing that I was that much further from my desk and my computer. Whatever the reason, as we walked down the stairs to the lobby, I felt like I could maybe do one pint at Desmond’s Tavern (433 Park Ave S, NYC).

Before long that one pint turned to two, then three, then more. We were joined by David’s friends Rudy and Bella from Maui and Sara who works for the Apple store, but we’ll forgive her that infraction. She agrees with me that the word ‘truthishly’ needs to make it’s way into the English lexicon. So we are both determined to use it as often as possible in casual conversation.

Rudy and Bella design sleek, stylish jewelry and sunglasses as Rue Belle Designs based in Maui. Rudy is from France originally and Bella was born and raised in Hawaii. This is not obvious at first glance. Her family is from northern Italy so of course the first crack she gets is always, “You’re no Samoan.” To which she’d reply, “You’re right, I’m not. I’m Italian.”

At one point, Sara pulled out a baggie of food clips that she had bought at Ikea. You know, those clips you use to keep potato chips fresh. Well they apparently work great as hair clips too. Before I knew it, everyone began sculpting their hair thanks to these plastic Swedish gems.

After snapping off a bunch of funny, fashionably incriminating pictures and a couple more pints, it was time for food. So off we went to Kun Jip for kimchi and bbq.
